We swapped our Cisco 3750 network for an Extreme network in the summer. Five X440 stacks and an X620 core. After the switches were provisioned I noticed %CPU spikes around 60% in the X440 stacks. I was not too concerned at the time because our Cisco 3750s ran permenantly above 80% CPU. The Extreme Networks Summit X440 series is enabling fine grained Quality of Service (QoS), stacking, high availability features and identity aware security in a compact, cost effective switch. Standards-based PoE/PoE+ support (802.3af/802.3at) allows the Summit X440 series to support the large-scale rollout of converged network devices such as ExtremeXOS supports the SummitStack-V capability using 2 of the SFP+ ports on the X440-G2 as stacking ports, enabling the use of standard cabling and optics technologies used for 10 GbE SFP+, SummitStack-V provides long-distance stacking connectivity of up to 40 km while reducing the cable complexity of implementing a stacking solution. Beginning with the ExtremeXOS 12.5 release, the term Summit Family Switches includes the Summit X440, X460, X460-G2, X480, X670, X670-G2, and X770 switches. A SummitStack is a combination of up to eight Summit family switches (excluding the Summit X440-L series) that are connected together. The Summit X430 leverages a compact 1RU and 10-inch deep form factor, along with a low volume operating mode that makes it ideal for open office and wiring closet environments. Summit X430 series switches support up to 4 fixed front panel 100/1000BASE-X (SFP) unpopulated ports (two SFP ports on the 8 port PoE+ switch) that can be utilized for Standards-based PoE/PoE+ support (802.3af/802.3at) allows the Summit X440 series to support the large-scale rollout of converged network devices such as IP telephones, wireless access points as well as physical security devices such as video cameras. You can install a X440-G2 Series switch in a rack. There are four possible rack mounting configurations, depending upon whether: • The switch I/O ports or the power supply side of the device face front. • The device is mounted flush with the rack posts or mid-mounted. Secure the X440-G2 Series switches to the Rack Initial Network Connection and Configuration Once you have connected power to the switch and verified LED activity, complete the setup process as follows: Connect a management station to the console port using either an Ethernet to serial adapter or DB-9 serial cable. Verify that the system LEDs are on (solid green or blinking green). The Avaya C363T-PWR Converged Stackable Switch, Extreme Networks Summit X450e-48p and BlackDiamond 12k switches are connected to each other in a full mesh topology.
