In 2018, FAO hosted the Technical Consultation for the Marking of Fishing Gear in Rome, Italy, which led to the publicationof "The Voluntary Guidelines for the Marking of Fishing Gear" in 2019. FAO is now working at the global level with various partners to address ALDFG and microplastics. The report says that climate variability and extremes are key drivers behind this rise, together with conflict and economic downturns, and are threatening to erode and reverse gains made in ending hunger and malnutrition. SOFI 2018 reveals new challenges on the road to Zero Hunger, while setting out urgent actions needed to achieve the goal by FAO SOFIA (2018) Aquaculture will play a larger role in seafood consumption in the coming decade With a population of 8.3 billion people by 2030, we'll need… Wild catch Aquaculture 50% more energy 40% more water 35% more food "Worldwide, nearly 60 million people (14 percent of them women) are directly employed in the fisheries and FAO SOFIA 20182016Aquaculture80.03 million tonnesFisheries90.91 million tonnes Global aquaculture today Aquaculture 80 million metric tons (MT) • Fish 54.1 MT • Molluscs 17.1 MT • Crustaceans 7.9 million tons • Other aquatic animals 1MT • Seaweed 30MT Counting seaweed, there is more seafood farmed than wild-caught The SOFIA report has tomes of fishing data organized by species, regions and whether they are captured wild or farmed. Global fish production is estimated to have reached about 179 million tons in 2018, with a total first sale value estimated at $401 billion. In 2018, FAO added handy color-coding and labels of sustainable and unsustainable, and now with the total landings calculation in 2020, communicating fishery status should be crystal clear: 65.8% of fisheries are sustainable supplying 78.7% of seafood, while the 34.2% of overfished fisheries contribute 21.3% of catch. The status of wild fish stocks Some 59.9 percent of the major commercial fish species that FAO monitors are now being fished at biologically sustainable levels, while 33.1 percent are being fished at biologically unsustainable levels — a situation that SOFIA 2018 describes as "worrying." (The other 7 percent are underfished). [19], and (C) the most recent iteration as presented by FAO in the 2016 SOFIA [4]. All three graphs show the same general pattern of worsening stock status trends.
