As a former die-hard manual transmisison enthusiast (I still own a 1995 Civic EX manual that I bought new and supercharged back in 1996), the CVT is great in the ways you like AND hate. PROS: That constant RPM that you don't like - it makes the car just shove itself forward, without falling back as cars that shift do - at each shift. Effortlessly. To shift properly, the automatic transmission has to know how hard the engine is working. There are two different ways that this is done. Some cars have a simple cable linkage connected to a throttle valve in the transmission. The further the gas pedal is pressed, the more pressure is put on the throttle valve. The ECM is the vehicle's internal computer that helps shift the gears automatically. The electronic sensors inside the transmission monitor the gear selection, speed, and throttle position. This includes a Control Module that adjusts the current provided to solenoids inside to control the gears. In a manual transmission, that piece is called a clutch, and in an automatic transmission, it's a torque converter. In order to swap your automatic transmission for a manual (or vice versa if that's your objective), you'll need to disconnect the current coupling material and install the new one. There will also be entirely new pedal 3. Performance Builds With a Transbrake. Performance builds that can support up to 1000 horsepower and more, have made automatic transmissions a better choice in a performance car. Such a car can become a real race car or muscle car just by adding a transbrake to the automatic. What this transbrake does is to enable the driver to build RPM by Changing the fluid solves plenty of transmission issues but if the problem of automatic transmission won't shift into 3rd gear persists, the parts you should check are the throttle cables. A defective cable with excessive slack is likely to create issues with smooth shifting of the gears. It may also totally stall the shifting. To come to a stop, shift down to 3rd gear at 20 mph, 2nd gear at 10 mph, and 1st at 5 mph. Experiment with it, but that is the general shifting area. I go by engine RPMs, as shift speeds will vary depending on the transmission and axle (or transaxle for front-drive) ratios and tire size in the car. It will need a new ECU/computer in addition to a new wiring harness, transmission mount, motor mount, and renovation of the firewall. To make it simpler, what you will need to convert transmission from manual to auto are: Reconfiguration of the Drivetrain on October 7, 2013 A manual shift automatic transmission is a type of automatic transmission that is either not damaged by repeated manual shifting of the forward gears, or designed to be shifted from first to a higher gear without the use of a clutch or taking your foot off of the accelerator. Unless your vehicle has a sealed transmission, you will be able to pull out the dipstick and read the levels. Make sure you wipe it off and put it back in for a more accurate reading. If the levels are low or below the fill line, it's time to add some fluid. While you are checking how much fluid there is, be sure to also check the condition. How do I make my transmission shift smoother? The answer is to add a throttle response controller. It is the best way to smooth our the shift point so that the shifting doesn't jump so hard.
