Flowcharts The following Life Support Flow Charts are provided free of charge by the Australian Resuscitation Council as a service to the community. Reproducing the ARC Flowcharts Permission to reproduce and use these flow charts is not required. Flow charts must be used as published by the ARC / NZRC with no alterations. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required for most doctors, nurses, and many other professions both inside and outside of the healthcare industry. Studying for your BLS exam can be a stressful experience. On top of having basic knowledge of the material, there are also several different algorithms, medications, and terminologies that you must have memorized. PALS Systematic Approach Algorithm. The PALS Systematic Approach is designed to provide a complete and thorough approach to the evaluation and treatment of an injured or critically ill child. It has several decision points and actions that must be committed to memory by PALS providers to ensure a high standard of care. View Algorithm. Resuscitation Council (UK) High flow oxygen 1 When skills and equipment available: • Establish airway • Monitor: • IV fluid challenge 3 • Pulse oximetry • Chlorphenamine 4 • ECG • Hydrocortisone 5 • Blood pressure Life-threatening problems: Airway: swelling, hoarseness, stridor Breathing: rapid breathing, wheeze, fatigue, cyanosis, SpO 2 < 92%, confusion Review guidelines for the pediatric cardiac arrest algorithm with our free resources. Start CPR. Start CPR with hard and fast compressions, around 100 to 120 per minute, allowing the chest to completely recoil. Give the patient oxygen and attach a monitor or defibrillator. Make sure to minimize interruptions in chest compressions and avoid Management algorithms: • Bradycardia • Tachycardia • 5 to 10 mL/kg NS/LR bolus, repeat PRN • Inotropic and/or vasoactive infusion • Consider expert consultation • Antidote for poisoning Obstructive shock: Specific management for selected conditions Ductal-dependent (LV outflow obstruction) Tension pneumothorax Support ABCs, giving the patient oxygen if needed, and perform a prehospital stroke assessment. Determine the time of stroke onset and triage the patient to a stroke center, alerting the hospital in advance so they can activate the stroke team. Consider directing the patient to CT scan, and if possible, check glucose levels. This algorithm is (c) Australia Resuscitation Council and is endorsed as the recommended approach to the emergency treatment of anaphylaxis by APLS Australia. Thanks to ANZCOR for allowing us to reproduce this flowchart here. The addendum drug and dosage table was created by APLS Australia.
